(1986) Gerd Binnig
Gerd Binnig (born July 20, 1947) is a German physicist, and a Nobel laureate.
In 1978, he accepted an offer from IBM to join their ZĂźrich research group. There, he met Heinrich Rohrer, with whom he shared half of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986 for their design of the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) (the other half of the Prize was awarded to Ernst Ruska).
